Graduate Programme | DevOps, HSBC
I’m a participant in the HSBC Graduate Programme, where I’m developing my skills in DevOps. My journey here is a story of coincidences shaped by one habit: saying “YES” to opportunities as they come. I attended the Women in Technology event with a friend, without any grand strategy. It was simply a case of “let’s give it a try and see what happens.” And that’s where I realized that HSBC was the right place for me.
Patrycja, what do you do professionally today?
Currently, I spend every day developing my skills in the DevOps field. I am a participant in a Graduate Programme, currently focused on learning Kubernetes and process automation.
Before joining HSBC, where were you in your professional and educational journey?
Before joining HSBC, I was studying programming at 42 Campus, where I got a real taste of what programming and problem-solving look like in practice. It was there that I met amazing people who later encouraged me to join your Java JUMP programme, which eventually led me to being accepted into the HSBC Graduate Programme.
You don’t become ready in isolation. You become ready by taking chances and making the most of the opportunities that come your way.
Do you remember the moment when you realized that technology might be the right path for you?
It wasn’t really a single moment. It was more about observing that software development is all about solving problems and continuously learning and improving. I liked that.
As you mentioned, first there was the Java JUMP programme, and later the Women in Technology Insight Programme event. What motivated you to attend the event? Was it something you had planned from the beginning?
It was definitely more of a “let’s give it a try and see what happens” approach. My journey has really been a series of coincidences that came from saying “yes” to opportunities as they appeared. I didn’t plan it step by step — I was simply open to new experiences and responded to what came my way. And the event sounded promising.
What do you remember from those two days of workshops, and when did you realize that this was the place where you wanted to grow?
What impressed me most was the openness of both the presenter and the participants at the event. What stood out to me right away — and what continues to reflect my experience to this day — is that HSBC gives people opportunities. I came in without having everything clearly defined, and that wasn’t a problem, even though the social norms I had internalized told me that it should be. Nothing could have been further from the truth. I felt that there was space here to learn, try new things, and gradually find my direction. To answer your question, I had that “click” moment already during the event — I knew I wanted to stay here for longer. It felt like the right step.
What convinced you the most?
The combination of the atmosphere and credibility. The atmosphere was welcoming and encouraging, and the stories I heard felt authentic. People talked about their journeys, not just their job titles. I left with the feeling that HSBC was a place where I would be challenged, but also supported by a team and a structure that helps people grow. The conversations showed me a company where people are approachable, supportive, and genuinely interested in your development, rather than simply judging whether you are already “ready.”
What did you gain from participating in the event?
Something very tangible: confidence and momentum. The event helped me connect the dots between what I had already been doing in programming and the opportunities that could come next. It also made joining HSBC feel achievable — a real possibility rather than a distant “maybe someday.”
How did you view your skills at that time?
Before the event, I saw my skills as “still not enough.” It felt as though I needed to learn ten more things before I could even think about giving it a try. Now I see it very differently. I’m already on the journey, still learning, and I’ve realized that you don’t become ready in isolation — you become ready by taking chances and making the most of the opportunities that come your way.
And what skills did you gain through the Java JUMP programme?
I gained knowledge of Java! Before the programme, I had been learning programming in the low-level language C, and this bootcamp gave me the opportunity to learn another language that I hope to use in the future.
And while it’s not exactly a skill, it’s something equally important — Java JUMP and my collaboration with your team helped me get into HSBC. For me, it was a springboard to further growth and new challenges.
What are your goals today?
I plan to keep working on building my confidence in the IT industry. I have a strong drive for continuous growth and for refining my skills, both in my current area and beyond. My goal is to become fully independent in the tasks and responsibilities entrusted to me.
I also feel a constant need to raise the bar for myself — not because someone else is better than me, but because I want to be better than the person I was the day before.
What would you say today to girls who are wondering whether to take that first step?
In short, but sincerely: give it a try — you have everything to gain!
And why do you think it’s worth taking part in Girls Code Fun programmes?
Speaking from my own experience, because they give you access to a community that opens doors.
Is it worth attending the event? We know that many women reading this are currently facing important career decisions.
It’s worth it. Without a second thought. It changes your perspective, and it costs nothing. What are two days compared to the career path you’re just beginning to build?
