Marii Shorina

Teenager passionate about new technologies, (Przemyśl, podkarpackie province)

I am a student and passionate about technology. Since September 2023, I have been participating in Girls Code Fun Foundation projects and developing programming skills, I want to work in this IT industry. I am building a portfolio and creating games that I play with my brother. I like to invent my own worlds and stories in games. I love animals, enjoy drawing, traveling and reading books on personal development. I don’t drink coffee, but I love fruit teas. Every day is an opportunity for me to learn something new and create something cool!

What skills and knowledge have you gained from the Girls Code Fun Foundation projects?

I’ve already used several projects, so I’ve really learned a lot: from Python to SQL, UX/UI, HTML, CSS, data analysis basics to soft skills.

What motivated you and what was a challenge in continuing your education with us?

Well-translated and free knowledge of modern technology was enough motivation to meet the challenge – 8:00 a.m. wake-up calls on Saturday and Sunday!

“Build a portfolio – every little project shows you that you can program”.

How has the program affected your educational future? Has it changed your approach to technology?

Before joining the project I was thinking about what I want to do in the future – programming or architecture. Today I see my future in programming. Also, mentoring helped me in making this decision. The mentors I worked with helped me answer various questions that came up during our meetings. After such meetings, the path seemed simpler.

And what do you consider your biggest success after participating in the project?

I learned to program – that’s first and foremost. I created my modest portfolio – this strengthened me. I discovered my potential – this is important, because the stereotypes I faced did not support me at all. On the contrary – I didn’t know if this was the right path.

What are your plans for the future, given the skills you gained from the project? Would you like to pursue further education or a career in the technology industry?

I’m definitely going to expand into IT. I know I still have a lot to learn ahead of me. But I have an open mind and plenty of desire. I plan to study new technologies. I know that this is the future. I am much more convinced of the right choice of this path, although, as I will repeat – I know that a lot of knowledge to acquire before me.

What advice would you give to other girls who are considering taking part in Girls Code Fun Foundation projects?

It’s worth trying something new and growing in different directions. It does not necessarily have to be something with which you will associate your future right away. It can be a hobby – it is worth taking advantage of such an opportunity. I recommend GCF because there is a friendly atmosphere and you can meet new people who have the same interests as you. There is a supportive environment and knowledgeable people.

Did anything surprise you during your participation?

Honestly? What surprised me the most is that a programmer is not a nerd with glasses 🙂 And also that girls can rule in programming too!
