I am a second-year Computer Science student and a future Machine Learning Engineer. Although I study technology, for a long time I wasn’t sure which direction in the IT industry I wanted to pursue. Participation in the Girls Code Fun Foundation project, Mentoring with Googlers, and working with my mentor, Ankit, turned out to be the turning point for me. In the conversation below, I share how mentoring helped me believe in my abilities and choose a specialization in Data Science.

You are studying Computer Science, but when you came across the Girls Code Fun booth at the Women in Tech fair, you weren’t sure about your path. What made you decide to take part in the program?

I saw the Girls Code Fun booth and was really encouraged by the openness of the ambassadors. At the time, I wasn’t sure which direction in Computer Science I wanted to take. I was looking for a place that would help me develop my skills and better understand the reality of the job market.

As part of the project, you took part in the mentoring program. How did this collaboration impact your approach to technology and to yourself?

The most valuable part for me was showing me the possible paths I could follow in the future. Working with Ankit helped me organize my ideas and realize that I have far more opportunities than I previously thought. I also started believing much more in my ideas and in the fact that, as a woman, I can create my own opportunities instead of waiting for them.

The program gave me more confidence and the courage to believe in my abilities. I realized that as a woman, I don’t have to wait for someone to give me an opportunity – I can create my own opportunities and pursue ambitious ideas.

Since working with a mentor gave you such a broad perspective, what changes did you notice in yourself after completing the program?

Before starting the program, I felt quite uncertain about my abilities and my professional future. After completing it, I gained, above all, a great deal of confidence. It’s much easier for me now to talk about my ideas, express my opinion, take on new challenges, and step out of my comfort zone. I also understand the job market much better.

You talk about confidence and understanding the market. What benefits did this bring you when it comes to choosing a specific specialization?

The project helped me confirm that I want to continue developing in IT, specifically in the field of Data Science and Machine Learning. I learned much more about these areas, and in my work, I also started focusing more heavily on real client needs.

What are your plans for the near future, considering these new goals?

In the coming year, I would like to complete an advanced Data Science project related to the transportation industry. I want to use the knowledge and confidence I gained from the program to create something that will be both a challenge and an important step in building my career path.

Finally, what advice would you give to girls who, like you once were, are standing at a crossroads?

Don’t hesitate for a single second! It’s an amazing adventure where you can not only gain new skills and experience, but also meet warm, supportive people. It’s truly worth giving yourself a chance and stepping out of your comfort zone.
