Ania Niejełow

software tester (Opole, opolskie province)

I entered the IT world more than a year and a half ago and I am very comfortable here. I enjoy meeting new people and participating in interesting IT events. I am a software tester. Testing is not only my job, but also a great passion. I love to gain new knowledge and skills in this field.

What are you currently doing professionally? and what do you want to do ultimately?

I am currently a software tester. Ultimately, I want to develop further in this direction. This I know for sure.

What prompted you to take part in the Girls Code Fun Foundation project?

I started my adventure with the Girls Code Fun Foundation in an unusual way – by being a mentor. In this role I acted in two projects – Code Her Future for adult women and Girls Rule in Python for teenage girls. Why? I wanted to test myself in a new role and help someone get into IT. Then, observing the foundation’s offer of workshops and support, I decided to take the training myself. I wanted to develop my skills and learn new things. And I did.

I entered the IT world a year and a half ago and I’m very comfortable here – I’m not going anywhere!

And what skills did you gain from the projects you participated in as a participant? Do you use them in your work?

I learned the basics of Python and advanced SQL functions. I learned how to work effectively with AI when working with SQL. Nowadays, I use SQL knowledge on a daily basis at work. It is essential when testing software and working with databases. As for Python, I will definitely use this knowledge soon when I start working professionally with automated testing.

What motivated you to continue participating in the project

The reason and motivator already at the start was a strong internal desire and even need to develop and acquire new skills. In the IT industry, it’s important to constantly be in the learning process. And during the workshop, once I took off, it was the presenters – Anna from SQL and Anna from Python – who were the driving force. Under their guidance, knowledge was given in an insanely accessible way. And when I looked at the other participants, how motivated they were, my commitment did not diminish, quite the opposite.

Have you participated in a mentoring process?

Yes, although within the Girls Code Fun Foundation I was the mentor. I will admit that working with a mentee gave me a lot of satisfaction and inspiration for my further development. Mentoring is an important relationship that bears fruit sometimes immediately and sometimes after time. There was an immediate ‘spark’ between me and my mentee, and we still keep in touch today. It’s nice to see her growing stronger in the world of technology.

Did the project help you decide to grow and work in the IT world? Do you want to pursue a career in the technology industry?

Definitely! Knowledge of Python and SQL is actually a must have in the testing world. The Foundation’s free workshops have given me just as much or maybe even more than the paid courses. I’m in this tech world and I’m not going anywhere from it. I feel much more confident and competent. My goal now is to grow in test automation.

And what was the most valuable experience for you from the educational projects? Maybe something surprised you?

Atmosphere, professionalism, a wealth of knowledge and skills. Everything served in a manner tailored to the group of female recipients. With a respectful and professional approach. Girls Code Fun equals a high level of training. And the atmosphere at the trainings – very supportive.

What advice would you give to other girls who are considering taking part in Girls Code Fun Foundation projects?

Do not hesitate just take part in them! The projects are really at a high level, led by experienced and great practitioners. The foundation gives great support. There is a supportive atmosphere for development during training and mentoring. When, if not now?

And did you notice any changes in yourself after completing the project? On the positive or negative side?

Actually, yes…I won’t surprise you when I say that on the plus side. I am more confident in interpersonal relations. On the professional front, a lot has changed, as the projects have expanded my knowledge and skills on many technical topics, such as testing the databases themselves. Also very important for me – I better understand the work of my colleagues.
