Girls Rule in Python! A comprehensive development program for teenage girls by the Girls Code Fun Foundation

About the Project

The project will benefit 200 teenage girls aged 14-18, including 40 with refugee experience from Ukraine, regardless of their place of residence in Poland. We encourage you to sign up with a friend!

We teach programming in Python from scratch. The girls will learn, among other things:

  • Theorems and arguments
  • Objects, loops, variables
  • Arrays, functions, conditions

so that, in the end, they can create their own game as a final project. The project consists of two parts: learning + mentoring. After completing the substantive classes (10 hours), participants will receive 3 months of mentoring support. The mentors in the project will be women who are developing in the world of new technologies and want to share their knowledge and experience as role models.

The Girls Rule in Python program by Girls Code Fun offers:

  • A non-school approach to knowledge sharing
  • The convenience of online learning
  • Practical application of new technologies
  • Strong encouragement to sign up with friends
  • A joint educational weekend
  • A wealth of inspiration and support from a mentor!

This project is a response to the latest Google report on girls' interest in new technologies.

Project Background

A staggering 91% of girls feel that computer science is a male-dominated field. They lack role models they can identify with and ultimately succumb to stereotypes. 18% of female students believe they would feel much more confident in learning CS if their friends were also pursuing it. Additionally, girls often see CS as just another subject to pass, rather than a valuable skill. These insights are highlighted in Google’s latest report, “Why Girls in Poland Aren’t Choosing Computer Science?”

Workshop Schedule

The learning component takes place over one weekend (Saturday 5 hours – Sunday 5 hours, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM) on the following dates:

  • September 30 – October 1
  • October 7-8
  • October 14-15
  • October 21-22
  • October 28-29
  • November 4-5
  • November 18-19
  • November 25-26
  • December 2-3
  • December 9-10

After the workshop, a 3-month mentoring period begins.

Program Goals

Through this program, girls will discover that computer science (CS) is a versatile skill that offers room for creativity and innovation, rather than just another school subject. During mentoring sessions, participants will explore the opportunities that development in the new technology sector offers to women. For 3 months, participants will regularly meet online with their mentors for a total of 6 check-in calls, each lasting a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 1 hour. The goal is to share insights, experiences, and ideas, and to demonstrate that the IT world is open to women. Check out the video to see what mentoring in this project will look like.
